Choosing swings before you draw the line

Most broken trendlines fail at birth: the trader connected convenient wiggles instead of swings that changed the short-term direction. Before the ruler comes out, label the last three impulse highs and lows on your chosen timeframe — daily for position work, hourly only if that is truly how you decide.

Ask whether each labelled swing still matters if the next bar is noisy. If you would not defend that high in a conversation, do not let it anchor a line. Channel analysis inherits the same rule: a parallel drawn from decorative pivots will look precise and still mislead.

In class we often print the same chart twice. On the first sheet, students draw freely. On the second, they may only connect pre-labelled swings. The second sheet is almost always calmer — and closer to a line they can trust for more than a session.
